Septaria was formed approximately 50 to 70 million years ago. As a result of volcanic eruptions, dead marine life, the balls formed. As the ocean receded, the balls dried up and cracked. Their composition caused the balls to collapse in size and cracks formed inside. Like decomposed shells, calcite and other organic and inorganic compounds seeped into the cracks. The outer thin shell of calcite then turned into aragonite. The name comes from Latin, septem means seven, because the balls were directed to crack at seven points in each direction. Septaria consists of calcite, aragonite and limestone.
